Enhancing your child’s reading experience and comprehension with Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition

I wanted to share some ways to support children’s engagement and comprehension with Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition. Whether you are reading this at school or at home, this book is the perfect read-aloud for children ages 4-7 and (or) independent readers. Children can see themselves as a reflection of the story characters’ emotions and actions by recalling their wash days.

Here are some comprehension questions you can ask before, during, and after reading Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition:

Before Reading

  1. What do you think the book is about based on the cover?

  2. What does tradition mean to you? Have you ever had a special routine or tradition with your family? What is it?

During Reading

  1. Why is Wash Day important to Nia and her family?

  2. How does Nia feel about wash day? What makes you think that?

  3. What are some of the things Nia and her family do together on wash day?

  4. Can you describe the different family members and their roles during wash day?

After Reading

  1. What was your favorite part of the book and why?

  2. How does Nia’s family show they care for each other during wash day?

  3. Why is it important for Nia and her family to take care of their hair?

  4. What did you learn about natural hair from the story?

  5. How does the story make you feel about spending time with your family?

  6. How did Nate’s feelings about wash day change throughout the story?

  7. Can you think of a time when you felt proud of your appearance? How did it make you feel?

I hope these questions were helpful during your read-aloud or with an independent reader.

Please check out Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition on Amazon and soon-to-be in Barnes and Noble and your local bookstore. As always thank you for supporting me as an independent author and I can’t wait for the next story to come!
