Art activities to do with Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition

As an extension activity to Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition children can do an art activity after reading.

Here are 2 art extension activities:

A family portrait

With your child discuss what makes each of their families special. Talk about what different traditions, appearances, and cultures are unique to them. Students can then draw/color a family portrait depicting their family members and (or) a tradition that they have. Encourage them to think about each person's unique features, such as hairstyles, clothing, and accessories. They can also include pets if they have any!

A self-portrait

With your child discuss how everyone's hair is unique and a beautiful part of who they are. Provide each child with a mirror and ask them to observe their hair's color, texture, length, and any unique features. Students can draw/color a portrait of themselves and are encouraged to use yarn, fabric scraps, or other materials to represent their hair texture. For example, yarn can be used for curly hair, strips of fabric for braids, and beads for accessories. When the portrait is finished children can decorate the border of their image with their favorite colors, patterns, or small drawings of things they love.

If you all do any other art activities please let me know as I would like to share it!

Please check out Nia’s Wash Day: A Family Tradition on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and your local bookstore. As always thank you for supporting me as an independent author.
